At A Better Dane County, we strive to connect local Wisconsinites to housing issues that affect their lives every day. As our community grows, so does the number of young families looking to purchase their first home. However, they face multiple barriers upon entering the market:
From 2006 to 2017, only one housing unit was added for every 1.44 new households. And our population growth is not expected to stop.
By 2040, our population is projected to reach over 600,000 - nearly 20% growth.
While Dane County as a whole is challenged, some of our communities face even more significant struggles:
In Waunakee, just 30% of homes are accessible for the average family of four.
In nearby Fitchburg, households making the median income of $66,000 still fall roughly $30,000 below the average cost of ownership –– only 5% of houses attainable.
It is a fact that as a community, we are growing, and all our new residents need places to live. Through effective public policy, we can structure our communities to build more homes that are attainable for the continued influx of new younger residents.
